Kavanaugh, Kentucky is a small, unincorporated community located in Boyd County, Kentucky. An unincorporated community is a place that doesn't have its own local government, but it's still a recognized area. Kavanaugh is found along U.S. Route 23, just north of the Lawrence County border.

Discovering Kavanaugh

Kavanaugh is a quiet community with a rich history. It's known for its historic church and its connection to the railroad.

The Story of Kavanaugh Chapel

The community of Kavanaugh is named after the historic Kavanaugh Chapel United Methodist Church. This church and its cemetery have been important local landmarks since they were first formed in 1866.

The original church building was a simple log cabin. In 1873, a proper white church building was constructed to replace the log cabin. It stands on the very same spot today.

The church was named in honor of Bishop Hubbard Hinde Kavanaugh. He was a Methodist Episcopal Bishop who was in office when the church was founded.

School Days in Kavanaugh

For many years, the Kavanaugh School was held in the same log cabin that served as the original church. Imagine learning in a log cabin!

The school operated next to the chapel and cemetery. However, in the mid-1950s, the school closed. This happened because of a big program to combine schools in the Boyd County School System.

Kavanaugh also had its own United States Post Office for a short time. It operated from 1901 to 1910.

Roads and Railroads

Kavanaugh is located along U.S. Route 23. This road was updated in 1984 with a modern four-lane highway.

The community also has CSX Transportation's Big Sandy Subdivision railroad tracks running through it. This railroad was once operated by the Chessie System. Before that, it was known as the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway Company.

Kavanaugh and Burnaugh

Just north of Kavanaugh is another community called Burnaugh. The name "Burnaugh" actually comes from a mix of "Kavanaugh" and a nearby place called Burgess Station.

Sometimes, people use the name "Burnaugh" to refer to both communities. This is because they are right next to each other and seem like one area. However, local people have a clear way of telling them apart.

They consider the church site as the dividing line. The area from the church south to the county line is strictly called Kavanaugh. The community north of the church is known as Burnaugh.

Kavanaugh is part of the ZIP Code Tabulation Area for zip code 41129. This zip code also includes the county seat, Catlettsburg.
