Kawawachikamach (which means ᑲᐛᐛᒋᑲᒪᒡ in the Naskapi language) is a special kind of village in northern Quebec, Canada. It is known as a Naskapi village municipality. The Naskapi people are an Indigenous group who have lived in this area for a very long time.
This village is unique because it is the only Naskapi village municipality. It has a different legal setup compared to other villages in Quebec. For example, it is different from Cree villages or Inuit communities.
Even though it is called a "village municipality" and has a mayor, Kawawachikamach actually has no people living there permanently. The Naskapi people live on a nearby piece of land called a Naskapi reserved land. This reserved land has the same name, Kawawachikamach.
The village municipality is used only by Naskapi people for activities like hunting or other traditional ways of life.
Where is Kawawachikamach?
The village municipality of Kawawachikamach is located in the northern part of Quebec. It is part of the Kativik Regional Government, which helps manage this large northern area.
There are actually two places named Kawawachikamach. One is the village municipality, which is north of the 55th parallel. The other is the Naskapi reserved land, which is south of this line. Because of this, they are in different administrative regions of Quebec. The village municipality is in Nord-du-Québec, and the reserved land is in Côte-Nord.
What About People Living There?
The village municipality of Kawawachikamach is officially uninhabited. This means that no one lives there all the time.
In the 2021 Census, Statistics Canada counted zero people living in the village municipality. This number has not changed since the 2016 Census. The land area of the village municipality is about 234.8 square kilometers (90.7 square miles).
All the Naskapi people live on the nearby reserved land. The village municipality is kept for their traditional activities, like hunting and other economic uses.
