Known as the Palomino Express, Kaweah Bar was a famous Quarter Horse racehorse. Born in 1966, he became a true champion on the racetrack. He was known for his incredible speed and winning spirit.
Kaweah Bar's Early Life
Kaweah Bar was a gelding, meaning he was a male horse that couldn't have foals. His father was a horse named Alamitos Bar. His mother was Angie Miss. Both his parents came from famous racing families. His grandfather was the legendary Three Bars. His grandmother was a daughter of Go Man Go.
An Amazing Racing Career
Kaweah Bar had an amazing racing career that lasted eight years. He competed in 101 races! Out of all those races, he won 36 times. He also finished second 17 times and third 12 times.
His fastest speed was measured with a Speed Index of 102. This is a special number that shows how fast a Quarter Horse can run. The American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) gave him 273 racing points. This earned him the title of Superior Race Horse.
Kaweah Bar was named the World Champion Quarter Running Horse twice. He earned this top honor in both 1968 and 1970. He was also named the Champion Quarter Running Gelding three times. Those titles came in 1969, 1971, and 1972. In total, he earned a huge amount of money from racing: $374,577.00!
Life After Racing
After his successful racing career, Kaweah Bar's owner decided to retire him from the track. He was then sold to be a chariot horse. Sadly, in late 1976, Kaweah Bar died in a trailer accident.
To remember this incredible horse, the Los Alamitos Race Course in Los Alamitos, California, holds a special race each year. It's called the Kaweah Bar Handicap, honoring his legacy.
Honors and Recognition
Kaweah Bar's achievements were so great that he was honored in a very special way. In 1998, he was inducted into the AQHA Hall of Fame. This is one of the highest honors a Quarter Horse can receive. It means he is remembered as one of the best Quarter Horses ever.
