Her School Journey

Kaye A. de Ruiz studied a lot to become a mathematician. She earned her first college degree, a Bachelor of Science, from Southern Oregon College. Later, she got a higher degree, a Master of Science, from Oregon State University.

While teaching at the Air Force Academy, she kept learning! She earned her Ph.D. in 1990. A Ph.D. is the highest degree you can get in a subject. She studied applied statistics at the University of California, Riverside. Her big research project was about a math model for experiments.

Teaching What She Loves

Kaye A. de Ruiz started her teaching career at Roseburg High School in Roseburg, Oregon. She loved showing students how math is used in real life. She would invite people from different jobs to talk about how they use math every day.

She also taught grown-up classes at the Misawa Air Force Base in Japan. In 1982, she started teaching at the United States Air Force Academy. There, she led the differential calculus course. She also taught many statistics classes. She always made sure students understood how to use math to solve problems outside of school. For a while, she was even in charge of the statistics department at the Academy.

Special Award

In 1994, Kaye A. de Ruiz received a special honor. She won the Louise Hay Award from the Association for Women in Mathematics. This award is given to people who have made great contributions to math education.
