Kazumasa Kawano (河野 和正, Kawano Kazumasa, born 7 November 1970) is a former Japanese football player. He was a goalkeeper for many years. Today, he is a goalkeeper coach for the J1 League club Nagoya Grampus.

His Football Journey

Kazumasa Kawano was born in Oita Prefecture, Japan, on November 7, 1970. After finishing high school, he joined a football club called Mazda in 1989. This club later became known as Sanfrecce Hiroshima.

At first, Kazumasa was a "reserve goalkeeper." This means he was a backup player. The main goalkeeper was Kazuya Maekawa. But starting in 1992, Kazumasa played in many games. This was because Maekawa often got injured.

In 1995, his team, Sanfrecce Hiroshima, finished second in the J1 League. This was a great achievement!

In 1997, Kazumasa moved to a new team, Nagoya Grampus Eight. Later that year, in September, he went to Yokohama Marinos for a short time. This is called a "loan." He played a lot for Yokohama Marinos. He filled in for Yoshikatsu Kawaguchi, who was away playing for the Japan national football team.

After returning to Nagoya Grampus Eight in 1998, he moved to Cerezo Osaka in 1999. At Cerezo Osaka, he often competed with Seigo Shimokawa for the goalkeeper spot. He played many matches from 2001.

However, in 2001, Cerezo Osaka was moved down to the J2 League. This is a lower division. In 2002, Kazumasa played a lot again. His team finished second in the J2 League. This meant they would move back up to the J1 League in 2003. Even though his team was promoted, Kazumasa decided to retire from playing football at the end of the 2002 season.

Becoming a Coach

After he stopped playing, Kazumasa Kawano started a new career as a coach. He began coaching at Cerezo Osaka in 2003. For many years, until 2013, he worked as a goalkeeper coach for the youth teams. A goalkeeper coach helps goalies improve their skills.

In 2014, he became a coach for the main, or "top," team at Cerezo Osaka. Now, he is a goalkeeper coach for Nagoya Grampus, helping new players become great goalkeepers.
