Kearsarge is a small, unincorporated community in Calumet Township. It is located in Houghton County, Michigan, in the United States. An unincorporated community means it's not a separate city or town with its own local government.
Kearsarge is about 2 miles (3.2 km) northeast of the nearby towns of Calumet and Laurium. You can find it along U.S. Route 41 and M-26, which are important roads in the area. Kearsarge even has its own post office, which uses the ZIP code 49942 for P.O. Box services.
History of Kearsarge
The community of Kearsarge was first settled in 1867. Many people came here because of the copper mining industry. From 1882 to 1925, different companies mined a special type of copper rock. This rock was called an "amygdaloid copper lode."
A post office officially opened in Kearsarge on November 20, 1893. Barnett S. Shearer was the very first postmaster. The community got its name from a famous ship, the USS Kearsarge. An old naval officer, who worked for the Calumet and Hecla Mining Company, named it after the ship. Kearsarge also had a train station. This station was part of the Hancock and Calumet Railroad. This railroad later became part of the Duluth, South Shore and Atlantic Railway.
During the Great Depression, a time of economic hardship, workers built a special memorial. These workers were part of the WPA. The WPA was a government program that created jobs. They built a stone monument to honor the 1862 naval ship.
Wolverine Location
The community known as Wolverine Location is considered part of Kearsarge. It is located just east of the main Kearsarge area.
Wolverine Location grew up around the Wolverine Mine. Its boundaries are Smith Avenue to the north and Water Street to the west. To the south, its boundaries are 4th and 3rd Streets.
