River Journey
Where the River Starts
The Kedgwick River begins in Quebec. It starts at a small body of water called Little Lake Kedgwick. This lake is found in the Réserve faunique de Rimouski, which is a wildlife reserve. The area is known for its mountains, part of the Notre Dame Mountains.
Flowing Through Quebec
From Little Lake Kedgwick, the river flows for about 22.8 kilometres (14.2 mi) in Quebec. It passes through Grand Lake Kedgwick. Along this part of its journey, it meets smaller streams like Murray Creek, Quigley Creek, and Keg Creek. The river then reaches the border between Quebec and New Brunswick.
Entering New Brunswick
Once it crosses into New Brunswick, the river is sometimes called the North Branch Kedgwick River. It flows for about 14.1 kilometres (8.8 mi) through Saint-Quentin. Here, it passes by places like "Devils Elbow Rapids." It also joins with the Belle Kedgwick River and the South Branch Kedgwick River.
The Kedgwick Forks
The spot where the North Branch and South Branch of the Kedgwick River meet is called "Kedgwick Forks." From this point, the main Kedgwick River flows for about 14.4 kilometres (8.9 mi). It continues to flow southeast, passing by "Rapids Depot."
Final Stretch of the River
The last part of the Kedgwick River's journey is about 29.5 kilometres (18.3 mi) long. It flows through Saint-Quentin Parish and then into Grimmer Parish. It passes near the "Kedgwick Game Management Area." Finally, the Kedgwick River flows into the Restigouche River. This meeting point is in a small community called Kedgwick River.
What's in a Name?
The name "Kedgwick" is used for many things in this region. It refers to the river, its smaller streams, a town, lakes, and even walking trails. The word "Kedgwick" comes from the Micmac word madawamkedjwik. This means "large branch" or "flowing under the earth." The name "Kedgwick River" was officially recognized on December 5, 1968. This was done by the Commission de toponymie du Québec, which is Quebec's names board.
