The Southern Branch of the Kedgwick River is a river located in New Brunswick, Canada. It flows through Saint-Quentin Parish in Restigouche County.

This river is a smaller stream that joins the main Kedgwick River. The Kedgwick River then flows into the Restigouche River. The Restigouche River travels north towards the border of Quebec, then east, eventually reaching the Chaleur Bay. The Chaleur Bay opens up to the Gulf of Saint Lawrence.

Where the River Starts

The Southern Branch of the Kedgwick River begins its journey from a small lake. This lake is about 0.2 kilometres (0.12 mi) long and sits at an elevation of 451 metres (1,480 ft). It is found in the northwestern part of New Brunswick.

The starting point of the river is located:

  • About 1.2 kilometres (0.75 mi) south of the border between Quebec and New Brunswick.
  • About 2.5 kilometres (1.6 mi) northeast of Miller Lake, which is where the Rimouski River begins.
  • About 27.9 kilometres (17.3 mi) west of where the Southern Branch Kedgwick River joins another river.
  • About 61.9 kilometres (38.5 mi) north of the center of Edmundston.

How the River Flows

The Southern Branch of the Kedgwick River flows for a total of 37.5 kilometres (23.3 mi). Here's how it travels:

  • It flows 4.4 kilometres (2.7 mi) to the east through Saint-Quentin Parish until it meets a stream coming from the west.
  • It then goes 6.9 kilometres (4.3 mi) to the southeast, reaching the "Twenty Seven Mile Brook."
  • Next, it flows 8.0 kilometres (5.0 mi) eastward to meet Meadow Brook.
  • It continues 2.5 kilometres (1.6 mi) to the southeast, where Indian Brook joins it.
  • The river then travels 1.2 kilometres (0.75 mi) to the southeast, meeting Eighteen Mile Gulch.
  • It flows 3.4 kilometres (2.1 mi) eastward to Portage Brook.
  • After that, it goes 1.9 kilometres (1.2 mi) to the northeast, curving widely towards the south through a mountain valley, until it reaches Old Shanty Brook.
  • It turns north for 3.6 kilometres (2.2 mi) to meet Bains Reef Gulch.
  • Finally, it flows 5.6 kilometres (3.5 mi) to the northeast, reaching its end point.

Where the River Ends

The Southern Branch of the Kedgwick River empties into the main Kedgwick River. This meeting point is on the west bank of the Kedgwick River, in a forested area known as "Kedgwick Forks."

This meeting point is located:

  • About 42.5 kilometres (26.4 mi) northwest from where the main Kedgwick River ends.
  • About 70.0 kilometres (43.5 mi) northeast of the center of Edmundston.
