Keith Buchanan (born May 11, 1973) is a politician from Northern Ireland. He is a member of the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP). Since 2016, he has been a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for the Mid Ulster area. He also works as the DUP's Chief Whip in the Northern Ireland Assembly. This means he helps make sure party members vote together on important issues. He also speaks for the party on cultural development and working with loyalist groups.
His Work as an MLA
Becoming an MLA
Keith Buchanan first ran for election in 2016. He was a candidate for the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) in the Mid Ulster area. He was the last person chosen in that election. He took the place of another MLA from his own party, Ian McCrea.
Re-election and New Roles
Buchanan was elected again in March 2017. He received many votes, showing strong support. After this election, he became the only unionist MLA for Mid Ulster. This happened because fewer MLAs were chosen for each area.
He also ran for a seat in the UK Parliament in June 2017. He came in second place in the Mid Ulster area. He ran again in the 2019 general election but finished second once more.
In November 2021, there was a disagreement. Another MLA said Buchanan's comments were "disgraceful." This was because Buchanan tried to connect the Gaelic Athletic Association to certain groups. The other MLA said Buchanan was "stirring up" tensions.
In the 2022 Assembly election, he was elected for Mid Ulster again. He was the fourth candidate chosen in that area. He also ran in the 2024 general election, finishing as the runner-up.
About His Life
Keith Buchanan has been married to Sandra Buchanan since 1998. They have one daughter named Loren, who was born in 2003. He is also an active member of the Church of Ireland.
