Sir Keith Seaman became the Governor of South Australia on September 1, 1977. He was the second governor in a row who had been a minister of religion. His job was to represent the monarch, Elizabeth II, in South Australia. He worked with different premiers during his time as governor. These included Don Dunstan, Des Corcoran, and David Tonkin.

During his time in office, there was a personal matter from his past. This issue was looked into by his church. It was resolved, and he was able to continue his work.
