Kelvin Parnell Upshaw (born January 24, 1963) is an American former professional basketball player. He played as a guard and was known for his speed and defense. Standing 6 feet 2 inches (1.88 meters) tall and weighing 180 pounds (82 kg), he played for several teams in the National Basketball Association (NBA) and other leagues around the world.

Early Life and College Basketball

Kelvin Upshaw grew up in Chicago, Illinois. He played basketball at Marshall High School. After high school, he continued his basketball journey in college. He first attended Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College from 1982 to 1983. Later, he transferred to the University of Utah, where he played for the Utah Utes from 1983 to 1986.

Professional Playing Career

Kelvin Upshaw began his professional basketball career in 1986. He was chosen in the second round of the 1986 CBA Draft by the Jacksonville Jets.

Starting in the CBA and USBL

Upshaw played for the Jacksonville Jets, which later became the Mississippi Jets, during the 1986–1987 season. In the spring of 1987, he also played for the West Palm Beach Stingrays in the USBL. He returned to the Mississippi Jets later in 1987 and was even selected to play in the 1988 CBA All-Star Game. After that, he joined the Rapid City Thrillers for a part of the season.

NBA Opportunities

In 1989, Kelvin Upshaw got his chance to play in the National Basketball Association. He signed with the Miami Heat in January 1989. During his time with the Heat, he played in nine games. Later that year, in March 1989, he joined the Boston Celtics. He played in 23 games for the Celtics, showing his strong defense and ability to score.

Upshaw briefly rejoined the Celtics in November 1989. He then signed with the Dallas Mavericks in January 1990. After playing a few games with the Mavericks, he joined the Golden State Warriors in February 1990, where he played in 23 games. He returned to the Dallas Mavericks in November 1990 and played 48 games for them.

Playing Around the World

Besides the NBA, Upshaw also played basketball in other countries. In 1991, he played in the Philippine Basketball Association for the Swift Mighty Meaties. He also played for the Shell Rimula X in the Philippines in 1992. His career also took him to Poland, Italy, and Argentina. He played for teams like Komfort Stargard Szczec in Poland and Gimnasia y Esgrima de Comodoro Rivadavia in Argentina.

Coaching Career

After his playing career, Kelvin Upshaw transitioned into coaching. He served as an assistant coach for several teams.

  • He was an assistant coach for the Quad City Thunder and the La Crosse Bobcats in the CBA.
  • He also coached in the NBDL (now the G-League) for the North Charleston Lowgators.
  • In 2004, he became a player development coach for the Dallas Mavericks.
  • He also worked as an assistant coach for the Gary Steelheads and the famous Harlem Globetrotters.
  • More recently, he was an assistant coach for the girls' basketball team at Charlotte Christian School from 2012 to 2013.
