Kemi Adeosun (born March 9, 1967) is a Nigerian financial expert. She used to be the Minister of Finance for Nigeria. She also chaired the board of the African Export–Import Bank (AfreximBank), which helps African countries trade with each other and the world.

Early Life and Education

Kemi Adeosun was born in London, England, on March 9, 1967. Her parents were both from Ogun State in Nigeria. Her father worked as a civil engineer for the government. Kemi is the third of his four children.

She studied Economics at the University of East London and earned a Bachelor of Science degree. She also completed a special diploma in Public Financial Management from the University of London. Kemi attended other important leadership training programs, including one at the famous Wharton Business School. In 1994, she became a Chartered Accountant with the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW). This means she is an expert in managing money and finances for businesses and governments.

Career Journey

Kemi Adeosun started her career in London in 1989. She worked at British Telecom as an accounting assistant. From 1990 to 1993, she was a senior audit officer at Goodman Jones. Later, she became a manager at London Underground and Prism Consulting.

From 2000 to 2002, Kemi worked as a Senior Manager at PricewaterhouseCoopers, a big accounting firm. In 2002, she became a financial controller at Chapel Hill Denham Management. She later became a managing director there in 2010.

After working with Quo Vadis Partnership, she was appointed the Commissioner of Finance for Ogun State in Nigeria in 2011. She held this important role until 2015. During this time, she helped improve the state's economy as part of Governor Ibikunle Amosun's team.

In November 2015, President Muhammadu Buhari appointed Kemi Adeosun as Nigeria's Minister of Finance. This was a very important job, as she was in charge of the country's money matters. While serving as Minister, she was also chosen to be the chairman of the board of Afreximbank. She took over from Ndagijimana Uzziel, who was the Minister of Finance for Rwanda.

Important Court Ruling

In 2018, there were questions about a certificate Kemi Adeosun had from the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). This is a program in Nigeria for young graduates. She resigned from her role as Minister of Finance on September 14, 2018, because of these questions.

However, on July 7, 2021, a court in Abuja, Nigeria, made an important decision. The court said that Kemi Adeosun was a British citizen when she graduated at age 22. Because of this, she was not required to take part in the NYSC program at that time. The court also said that when she returned to Nigeria and became a Nigerian citizen, she was already over 30 years old, which meant she was no longer eligible for youth service. This ruling cleared her name regarding the certificate.

Political Involvement

For most of her career, Kemi Adeosun did not belong to a political party. However, on May 5, 2018, she joined Nigeria's ruling party, the All Progressives Congress (APC).
