The Kemijoki River

The Kemijoki is the longest river in Finland. It stretches about 550 kilometers (340 miles) long. This important river flows through cities like Kemijärvi and Rovaniemi. Finally, it reaches the Gulf of Bothnia near the city of Kemi.

Near Rovaniemi, another river called the Ounasjoki joins the Kemijoki. The Kemijoki is also known for its many power plants. These plants use the river's flowing water to create electricity.

The Kemijoki River: Finland's Longest

The Kemijoki river is a very important natural feature in Finland. It plays a big role in the country's geography and energy production. Its long path helps connect different parts of Finland.

Where Does the Kemijoki Flow?

The Kemijoki starts its journey in the northern parts of Finland. It then flows southwards through several towns and cities. As it travels, it passes through the large lake of Kemijärvi. It also flows right through the city of Rovaniemi. This city is often called the official hometown of Santa Claus. After a long journey, the river empties into the Gulf of Bothnia. This gulf is part of the Baltic Sea.

Power from the River: Hydroelectricity

The Kemijoki river is a major source of hydroelectric power in Finland. Hydroelectricity is a clean way to make electricity. It uses the natural force of moving water. The first power plant on the Kemijoki was built in 1949. It was located in a place called Isohaara.

Today, there are 15 power plants along the Kemijoki river. These plants are owned by two companies: Kemijoki Oy and Pohjolan Voima Oy. They work together to manage the river's energy.

How Much Power Does it Make?

In 2003, the power plants on the Kemijoki produced a lot of electricity. They made about 4.3 TWh (terawatt-hours) of power. This amount was a big part of Finland's total hydroelectric production. It made up about 34.5% of all the hydroelectric power made in the country that year. This shows how important the Kemijoki river is for Finland's energy needs.
