Ken Lockwood Gorge is a really beautiful natural area in Hunterdon County, New Jersey. You can find it between the towns of Califon and High Bridge. This special place was bought in 1948 by a group that looks after fish, game, and wildlife. Many people say it's "one of New Jersey's most beautiful places." Today, the New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife helps manage and protect it.

What Makes the Gorge Special?

The main part of Ken Lockwood Gorge is a 2.5-mile (4 km) stretch of the South Branch of the Raritan River. This river flows through the middle of the area. The gorge covers about 260 acres (105 hectares) and is known as a Wildlife Management Area. This means it's a protected space for animals and plants.

The land around the river has steep, hilly woodlands. These forests are home to many different kinds of plants and animals. You can find a wide variety of birds and mammals living here. It's a great place to see nature up close!

Fishing at Ken Lockwood Gorge

Ken Lockwood Gorge is super famous for trout fishing. The New Jersey Division of Fish & Wildlife has made it a "Trout Conservation Area." This means there are special rules for fishing here to help protect the trout.

For example, the number of fish you can catch is different from other parts of the Raritan River. Also, you are not allowed to use bait when you fish here. These rules help keep the trout population healthy for everyone to enjoy.

Who Was Kenneth Lockwood?

The gorge is named after a man named Kenneth Lockwood. He was an outdoor journalist and a strong supporter of protecting nature. Kenneth Lockwood was best known for his newspaper column, "Out In The Open," which was in the Newark Evening News.

He believed it was important to set aside land for hunting and fishing, so these activities could continue for many years. Kenneth Lockwood passed away on April 2, 1948. The Ken Lockwood Gorge was named in his honor shortly after that.
