Studying to Be an Engineer
Kendra Sharp went to several universities to become an expert engineer. She earned her first degree, a Bachelor of Science (BS), from the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign in 1993.
Advanced Degrees
After her first degree, she continued her studies. In 1994, she earned a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) from the University of Cambridge in England. She then got a Master of Engineering (ME) from the University of California, Berkeley in 1996.
Her highest degree, a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), was also from the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign. She finished this in 2001. Her PhD research looked at how liquids and tiny particles move inside very small tubes.
Her Work as a Professor
In 2010, Professor Sharp joined Oregon State University (OSU). She became a faculty member in the mechanical engineering department.
Humanitarian Engineering
Kendra Sharp is now the director of the humanitarian engineering program at OSU. This program focuses on using engineering skills to solve problems for people in need. For example, they might work on projects to provide clean water or sustainable energy.
In 2015, she was given the special title of Richard and Gretchen Evans Professor of Humanitarian Engineering. This shows how important her work in this field is.
What She Researches
Professor Sharp is an expert in something called "experimental fluid mechanics." This is the study of how liquids and gases move. She uses experiments to understand these movements.
Her research also includes:
- Helping with international development projects.
- Using technology to solve humanitarian problems.
- Creating sustainable ways to get energy and water.
Awards and Special Recognition
In 2018, Kendra Sharp received a special award called the Edwin F. Church Medal. This medal recognizes engineers who have made important contributions to engineering education.
