Building the Ballpark
Plans for a brand new baseball stadium for the West Virginia Mountaineers baseball team started in 2013. Construction began on October 17, 2013. The stadium was built in Granville, right next to Morgantown. It's part of a big shopping and entertainment area.
The ballpark has 2,500 comfy seats. There are also extra spots on a grassy hill and special club seating. Fans can enjoy a special deck with lots of fun things to do. The park is even open all year round! The playing field has a special fake grass surface, except for the pitcher's mound, which is made of clay.
In 2014, another team decided to move here. The Jamestown Jammers, a minor league team, moved to West Virginia. They changed their name to the West Virginia Black Bears. They became the second team to play at the stadium. The Black Bears were first linked to the Pittsburgh Pirates. Later, they became a collegiate summer baseball team. This means college players play for them in the summer.
The stadium was supposed to open earlier, but bad weather in February 2015 caused a delay. So, the grand opening was pushed back to April 10, 2015.
Why the Name Changed
In 2024, the stadium got a new name: Kendrick Family Ballpark. It used to be called Monongalia County Ballpark. West Virginia University renamed it to honor Ken Kendrick and his family. Ken Kendrick is a former student of WVU and owns the Arizona Diamondbacks baseball team.
The Kendrick family made a big donation to the university. This money helped build a new indoor training facility. This new building opened in March 2025. It's 8,200 square feet and has two pitching lanes and two batting cages. It also has special technology to help players get better.
