Kenilworth Square is a beautiful old square located in the Rathgar area of Dublin, Ireland. It's known for its Victorian-style houses. A "Victorian" style means it was built during the time Queen Victoria ruled, which was from 1837 to 1901.
This square was built over many years, starting in 1858 and finishing around 1879. Unlike some bigger city squares, Kenilworth Square grew in a more natural way. It was built around a central green area. The houses here have different designs, but they are all made of red brick.
History of Kenilworth Square
The area around Kenilworth Square began to develop after 1847. This was when the nearby towns of Rathgar and Rathmines were officially created. An old map from 1867 shows that most of the building plots around the square were already laid out and had houses on them by then.
The Green Space at the Center
The large green area in the middle of Kenilworth Square is not open to everyone. It is privately owned by St Mary's College. The college bought this land in 1948.
Today, this green space is used for sports. It has rugby pitches and a cricket pitch. There are also changing rooms for the players.
Kenilworth Bowling Club
A sports club called the Kenilworth Bowling Club started here in 1892. It began in the backyard of Charles Eason. He was the person who founded a well-known company called Eason & Son. His house was at 29 and 30 Kenilworth Square.
In 1909, the club moved to a different location. They got a 25-year lease for a space in nearby Grosvenor Square. Even though they moved, the club still keeps the name "Kenilworth."
