Kenneth John Conant (born June 28, 1894 – died March 3, 1984) was an American expert in the history of architecture. He was also a teacher. Conant focused on studying buildings from the Middle Ages. He is especially famous for his work on Cluny Abbey.

Kenneth Conant's Life and Work

Kenneth Conant was born in Neenah, Wisconsin. He went to Harvard University and earned a degree in Fine Arts in 1915. His teachers, like Herbert Langford Warren, taught him a lot about art history. These ideas came from famous art historians like Charles Eliot Norton and John Ruskin.

Conant served in the army during World War I. He was part of the 42nd Infantry Division. He was hurt in a big battle in 1918. After the war, he went back to Harvard. In 1926, he published his important research about the Santiago de Compostela Cathedral.

His most important work was studying Cluny Abbey in France. This was a very old and important monastery. He started digging there in 1927. He received money for his research from a special award called the Guggenheim Fellowship. He believed Cluny Abbey was one of the greatest buildings ever made.

Conant was chosen as a member of important groups like the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He taught architectural history at Harvard from 1924 until he retired in 1955.

Conant's Lasting Impact

In 1916, a painter named Denman Ross created a portrait of Conant. This painting is now kept at the Harvard Art Museums.

In 1940, some of Conant's students started a group called the Society of Architectural Historians. They were inspired by his teaching and his passion for old buildings.
