Kenneth Mackenzie, 8th of Kintail facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Kenneth Mackenzie (died around 1498 or 1499), also known as "Coinneach Oig," was an important leader in the Scottish Highlands. He was traditionally known as the 8th chief of Kintail and led the Clan Mackenzie.

Who Was Kenneth Mackenzie?

Kenneth Mackenzie was the oldest son of Kenneth Mackenzie, 7th of Kintail, who died in 1492. His mother was likely Finvola, the daughter of Gilleasbaig (also called "Celestine") Macdonald of Lochalsh.

The Mackenzie family originally came from the Northwest Highlands of Scotland. However, by the end of the 1400s, their main area of power had moved to Easter Ross.

Kenneth's Life and Challenges

It seems Kenneth never officially became his father's heir. Because there aren't many records from his time, some historians wonder if he truly existed.

Stories say that Kenneth and another chief, Ferquhard Mackintosh, 12th of Mackintosh, were held as special prisoners in Edinburgh by King James IV of Scotland. This was a way for the king to make sure their clans behaved. However, both Kenneth and Ferquhard managed to escape from the king's guards.

Not long after their escape, while they were in Torwood in Stirlingshire, Kenneth was attacked and died. The attack was carried out by the leader of the Clan Buchanan. Ferquhard Mackintosh survived the attack but was held prisoner for many years. The Laird of Buchanan, who had been an outlaw, was then welcomed back into the king's favor.

Kenneth Mackenzie did not have any children who could legally inherit his position. So, his half-brother, John Mackenzie, 9th of Kintail, became the next chief. John faced a big challenge for his leadership from their uncle, Hector Roy Mackenzie of Gairloch.
