The Kern Plateau horkelia (scientific name: Horkelia tularensis) is a special kind of flowering plant. It belongs to the rose family, just like the roses you might see in a garden!

This plant is very unique because it is endemic to a specific place. This means it only grows naturally in Tulare County, California, in the High Sierra Nevada mountains. Scientists have found only about ten places where this plant grows. It likes to live in rocky, open areas where it gets lots of sun.

What Does Kern Plateau Horkelia Look Like?

The Kern Plateau horkelia is a perennial herb. This means it lives for more than two years and grows back each season. It forms clumps that look like mats on the ground.

Leaves and Stems

Its leaves are quite short, usually up to about 10 centimeters long. Each leaf is made up of many tiny leaflets packed closely together. The plant's leaves and stems are covered in fine hairs. These hairs give the plant a cool, light gray-green color.

The stems can grow up to about 20 centimeters tall. At the top of the stems, you'll find groups of flowers called inflorescences.

Flowers

Each flower has pointed green parts called sepals. These sepals can be up to half a centimeter long. Inside, the flower has narrow white petals that are shorter than the sepals.
