Kerry Gerard Shine was born on October 5, 1948. He is an Australian politician from the Labor Party. He was a member of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland for the area called Toowoomba North from 2001 to 2012. He also served as the Attorney-General of Queensland from 2006 to 2009. An Attorney-General is like the chief legal advisor to the government. In March 2020, he was elected to the Toowoomba Regional Council, which helps manage the local area.

Kerry Shine's Early Career

Before he became a politician, Kerry Shine was a solicitor, which is a type of lawyer. He became a solicitor in 1972. In 1977, he started his own law firm called Shine Lawyers. This company grew to have many offices across Australia. They helped many people with legal problems. In 1999, he also helped start another law firm, Gouldson Legal. This firm helps people who have been injured.

Kerry Shine's Political Journey

Kerry Shine first tried to become a politician in 1998. He ran for election in the area of Toowoomba North.

First Elections and Roles

He was first elected in 2001 during a big election win for the Labor Party. Peter Beattie became the Premier of Queensland (like a state governor). Kerry Shine kept his seat in the 2004 election.

In 2005, Kerry Shine was given a new role. He became a Parliamentary Secretary. This meant he helped a government minister named Warren Pitt. He also advised the Premier on matters in Western Queensland.

In September 2006, he became the Minister for Natural Resources and Water. Then, in November 2006, he was appointed as Queensland's Attorney-General and Minister for Justice. He also helped the Premier with issues in Western Queensland.

Making New Laws

As Attorney-General, Kerry Shine worked on many important changes to laws. He led a big review of Queensland's Criminal Code, which contains all the laws about crimes. He also looked into laws about accidents and how courts work. He helped create the new Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal (QCAT). This is a special court that helps solve many kinds of disagreements. He also introduced changes to help people who were victims of crimes.

Later Elections and Council Role

In the 2009 election, Kerry Shine won his seat again. However, his lead over his opponent, Trevor Watts, was smaller. After this election, he decided to spend more time helping the people in his local area.

He became the Chair of a committee that looked at industry, education, and training. He was also a member of other committees. These committees helped review new laws related to the Attorney-General's office, police, transport, and planning.

In the 2012 election, Kerry Shine ran against Trevor Watts again. He lost this election as the Liberal National Party won by a lot. He tried again in the 2015 election, but he narrowly lost to Watts. He also ran in the 2017 election but lost to Watts again.

In 2020, Kerry Shine was elected to the Toowoomba Regional Council. This means he now helps make decisions for the local community in Toowoomba.

Community Involvement

Kerry Shine is very involved in his community. He is a member of the Downs and South West Law Association. He is also a Life Member of the Queensland Law Society. He is a member of the Toowoomba Chamber of Commerce, which supports local businesses. He used to be on the Council of the University of Southern Queensland. He also served as a member of the Toowoomba City Council in the past.

He has also been involved in many sports groups. He was the Secretary of the Rangers Rugby Union Football Club. He was an Honorary Solicitor (a lawyer who helps for free) for the Queensland Country Cricket Association. He was also the President of the Toowoomba Cricket Association.
