Kerry Gerard Shine (born 5 October 1948) is an Australian politician. He was a member of the Labor Party. From 2001 to 2012, he represented Toowoomba North in the Queensland Parliament. He also served as the state's top legal officer, the Attorney-General of Queensland, from 2006 to 2009. In March 2020, he was elected as a local council member for the Toowoomba Regional Council.

Kerry Shine's Early Career

Before becoming a politician, Kerry Shine worked as a solicitor. A solicitor is a lawyer who gives legal advice and prepares legal documents. He became a solicitor in 1972.

Starting a Law Firm

In June 1977, he started his own law firm called Shine Lawyers. This firm helps people with legal problems. It grew into a large company with over 40 offices across Australia. These offices provide legal help to many Australians.

Co-founding Another Firm

In 1999, Kerry Shine also helped start another law firm. It was first known as Shine Gouldson Lawyers. Today, it is called Gouldson Legal. This firm helps people who have been injured.

Kerry Shine's Political Journey

Kerry Shine first tried to become a politician in 1998. He ran for the seat of Toowoomba North.

First Election Wins

He was first elected to the Queensland Parliament in 2001. This was a big election win for the Labor Party. Peter Beattie became the Premier of Queensland again. Kerry Shine won his seat again in the 2004 election.

Taking on Ministerial Roles

In July 2005, Kerry Shine received new responsibilities. He became a Parliamentary Secretary. This role helps a minister with their duties. He also advised the Premier on matters in Western Queensland.

In September 2006, he became the Minister for Natural Resources and Water. Then, on 1 November 2006, he was appointed as Queensland's Attorney-General and Minister for Justice. The Attorney-General is the chief legal advisor to the government. He also continued to assist the Premier in Western Queensland.

Important Legal Changes

As Attorney-General, Kerry Shine worked on many new laws. He led a major review of Queensland's Criminal Code. This code contains the main laws about crimes. He also helped create the new Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal (QCAT). QCAT helps solve disputes outside of court. He also introduced changes to help victims of crime.

Later Elections and Council Role

In the 2009 state election, Kerry Shine kept his seat in Toowoomba North. However, his winning margin was smaller. After this election, he decided to step back from being a minister. He wanted to spend more time helping people in his local area.

He became the chair of a committee focused on industry, education, and training. He was also part of other committees that looked at new laws.

In the 2012 election, Kerry Shine ran against Trevor Watts again. He lost his seat in this election. He tried to win it back in the 2015 election but narrowly lost. He ran again in 2017 but lost to Trevor Watts once more.

In 2020, Kerry Shine was elected to the Toowoomba Regional Council. He now serves as a local council member.

Community Involvement

Kerry Shine has been very involved in his community. He is a member of the Downs and South West Law Association. He is also a Life Member of the Queensland Law Society. He is part of the Toowoomba Chamber of Commerce.

He has also served on the Council of the University of Southern Queensland. He was a member of the Toowoomba City Council in the past.

Sporting and Other Groups

Kerry Shine has supported many sporting groups. He was the Secretary of the Rangers Rugby Union Football Club. He was also the Honorary Solicitor for the Queensland Country Cricket Association. He served as President of the Toowoomba Cricket Association. He was also the Honorary Solicitor for the Darling Downs Rugby Union Club. He is a member of the Toowoomba Turf Club and Brisbane Racing Club. He is also a member of the Australian Services Union.

Personal Life

Kerry Shine has three adult children.
