Keung To's Music Journey
Joining Mirror in 2018
In 2018, Keung To joined a TV talent show by ViuTV called Good Night Show - King Maker (Chinese: 全民造星). He was contestant number 99. On October 14, he won the whole competition! His score was a mix of votes from judges and the public.
Soon after, on November 3, 2018, Keung To officially joined the boy band group Mirror. They announced their first song, "In a Second" (一秒間), at a special event.
Solo Songs: 2019-2021
In June 2019, Keung To released his first solo song, "Seed No.1" (Chinese: 一號種籽). It quickly became popular and reached third place on the music charts.
In July, he held his first solo concert, and all the tickets sold out super fast! His next two songs, "Atlantis" (Chinese: 亞特蘭提斯) in September and "A Little More A Day" (Chinese: 一天多一點) in December, also did well on the Hong Kong music charts.
In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic changed his plans to film a music video in South Korea. Because of the pandemic, Keung To released a song called "The Love Without Words" (also known as "Saying I Love You With My Mouth Covered"; Chinese: 蒙着嘴說愛你). The music video showed how the pandemic affected people in Hongkongers. This song won "Most Popular Song" at the 2020 Ultimate Song Chart Awards. Keung To also won "Most Popular Male Singer" at the same awards!
On September 2, 2020, Keung To released his fifth song, "Disease of Loneliness" (Chinese: 孤獨病). This song was different from his others because it had a sadder feeling. Keung To even helped create the idea for the music video, which was filmed in one continuous shot! Later, on November 15, he released his sixth song, "Love Visa Application" (Chinese: 愛情簽證申請). He helped write the lyrics and the story for the music video, which was made in Taiwan.
On March 19, 2021, Keung To released "Master Class," a song with a mix of Reggaeton and Blues music. People loved it! On May 29, 2021, "Master Class" became his first song to reach number one on four different Hong Kong music charts. His eighth song, "Dear My Friend," came out on August 5, 2021. This sad song was about his friend Kin Lam, who passed away suddenly. The song was number one on streaming charts for four weeks. It also won "Most Popular Song" at the 2021 Ultimate Song Chart Awards, making him the only person to win both "Most Popular Song" and "Most Popular Male Singer" two years in a row! On August 27, Keung To and Fatboy from the group Error released a song together called "Agent Fat Keung 2.0" (Chinese: 特務肥姜2.0).
Growing as an Artist: 2021-2023
In September 2021, Keung To announced a new project that included a mini-documentary series on Mirror's YouTube Channel. The first part, "Answers," came out on November 9, 2021, and the second part, "Questions," on November 19. Keung To wanted to show his true self and talked about how he dealt with a lot of pressure and how it affected his feelings. His ninth solo song, "Spiegel Im Spiegel" (《鏡中鏡》), was first performed live on December 7, 2021. He used a dance style called krumping to show the strong feelings of being alone and doubting himself because of his fame. The last part of his documentary came out on January 26, 2022, where he reminded himself how he got through tough times.
He also worked with singer-songwriter AGA on a song called "I Know," released on December 16. This was his first time singing a duet with a female singer.
Keung To released his tenth solo song, "What the Work Says," as a birthday gift to his fans on April 30, 2022. This song was against war and violence, inspired by the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Keung To also directed the music video, which was like a big Broadway show! It was even nominated for "Best Music Video" at the Asian Television Awards.
In July 2022, Mirror's public activities stopped for a while after a serious accident at one of their concerts. All the members, including Keung To, took a break. They returned in October 2022 to promote a TV series. However, on November 11, Keung To had an accident during a basketball game and hurt his knee and Achilles heel. He needed surgery and a long time to recover.
Even though he took a long break and only released two songs that year, Keung To still won awards! He won 4th place for "Top 10 Ultimate Songs" with "Spiegel Im Spiegel" and "My Favourite Song Award" with "What the Work Says." His performance at the awards was his first time back on stage after his surgery. Some people criticized him for his emotional and physical condition during the performance.
Because of this, Keung To released his eleventh song, "Dummy." This song was about being humble and reminding himself to stay grounded and not become a "mindless dummy." In interviews, Keung To said he had to work hard to deal with the negative comments but was thankful for the criticism because it helped him see his flaws and get better. He performed "Dummy" live on April 2, 2023, and later called it "one of the most important performances of his career."
Solo Concerts and More Success: 2023-Present
Keung To held his first big solo concert series called "Waves: In my sight 2023" in August 2023. All four shows at the AsiaWorld Arena were sold out! He released his twelfth song, "Ocean" (《濤》), as the main song for these concerts. He also worked with a famous dancer, Mui Cheuk-Yin, to create an amazing opening dance that mixed modern and Chinese styles. "Ocean" won "My Favourite Song Award" in 2023 with a record number of votes, making it Keung To's fourth year in a row winning this award – a first in the award's history!
At his solo concert, Keung To performed two new songs that hadn't been released yet: "You are out of this world," which was a thank you to his fans, and "Every Single Time," a love song written by Louis Cheung.
On November 23, 2023, he released his thirteenth solo song, "The Irregulars". The music video was filmed mostly in Taiwan and featured actress Tammy Lin, who was also in his earlier video for "Love Visa Application."
Keung To then worked with lyricist Siu Hak again on his fourteenth song, "Dark Moon". This song is about the good and bad sides of people and how to resist bad desires by remembering your pure intentions. This was also his first time working with producer T-Ma.
He also collaborated with Gareth Tong and Singaporean singer-songwriter Gentle Bones on an English and Mandarin song called "Bread and Better". The music video was released on February 24, 2024.
"You are out of this world" was released on Keung To's 25th birthday, April 30, 2024, as a special gift for his fans.
"Every Single Time" was released on August 7, 2024, and its music video was directed by Stephen Fung.
