Kevin Bruce Anderson (born August 5, 1955) is a person who used to lead sports programs at colleges in America. He was an athletic director for the Maryland Terrapins, which is the main sports program at the University of Maryland, College Park. He also worked for California State University, Northridge. Kevin Anderson left his role at the University of Maryland in April 2018.

Early Life and Education

Kevin Anderson grew up in San Francisco, California. He went to Abraham Lincoln High School. There, he played many different sports.

In 1979, he graduated from San Francisco State University. He earned a bachelor's degree in political science. After college, Anderson coached high school football for a while. He also studied management at special programs.

Later, Anderson started working in fundraising for the United Negro College Fund. This led him to begin his career in college sports. He joined the sports department at the University of California, Berkeley when he was 32 years old.

Leading College Sports Programs

Kevin Anderson became an athletic director, which means he was in charge of all the sports teams at a college. He made important decisions about coaches, budgets, and how the teams operated.

His Time at Army

Anderson's first job as an athletic director was at the United States Military Academy. He led the Army Black Knights sports program from 2004 to 2010. At Army, he was responsible for 25 different sports. These programs served more than 900 student-athletes.

  • On December 26, 2008, Anderson hired Rich Ellerson to be the new head football coach for Army.
  • On September 24, 2009, Anderson decided to let go of Jim Crews, who was the head basketball coach at Army.

His Time at Maryland

Kevin Anderson became the athletic director for the Maryland Terrapins in 2010. He stayed in this role until 2018. During his time at Maryland, many big changes happened.

  • On December 21, 2010, Anderson fired Maryland's head football coach, Ralph Friedgen. Friedgen had just been named the ACC Coach of the Year that season.
  • On January 2, 2011, Anderson hired Randy Edsall from Connecticut as the new head football coach for Maryland.
  • On May 9, 2011, Anderson hired Mark Turgeon from Texas A&M to be the new head basketball coach. Turgeon replaced the retiring Gary Williams.
  • In November 2011, Anderson suggested cutting eight sports teams. These included men's track and field, swimming, tennis, and women's water polo.
  • On July 1, 2014, the Maryland Terrapins left the Atlantic Coast Conference. They had been a founding member for 62 years. They joined the Big Ten Conference instead.
