Kevin Hooks (born September 19, 1958) is an American actor and a director of movies and television shows. He is known for his acting roles in the film Sounder and the TV series The White Shadow.

A Career in Acting
Kevin Hooks was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His father is Robert Hooks, a well-known actor and director. Kevin's acting career started when he was just a child.
Early Success on Screen
When he was 10 years old, Kevin starred in J.T., a TV special from 1969. He played a young boy in Harlem who takes care of a sick cat. The show was very popular and won a special award.
In 1972, he appeared in the hit movie Sounder. He played the oldest son in a family of sharecroppers during the Great Depression. The movie tells the story from his character's point of view, as he has to become the "man of the family." His co-stars, Paul Winfield and Cicely Tyson, were nominated for Academy Awards for their roles.
Another major role for Hooks was in the 1975 movie Aaron Loves Angela. The film was a modern story similar to Romeo and Juliet, set in Harlem, New York.
Becoming a TV Star
From 1978 to 1981, Hooks played Morris Thorpe in the TV show The White Shadow. The show was about a high school basketball team, and his character became very popular with audiences. In 1986, he also starred in a comedy series called He's the Mayor.
A Career in Directing
After a successful acting career, Kevin Hooks began directing movies and television shows.
Directing for Film and TV
In 1991, Hooks directed the movie Strictly Business. He went on to direct other popular films, including Passenger 57 starring Wesley Snipes, and Fled with Laurence Fishburne and Stephen Baldwin.
Hooks has also directed many episodes for famous TV shows. He worked on the series Prison Break as both a director and a producer. He also directed two episodes of the show Lost.
In 2003, Hooks directed a new TV version of Sounder, the movie that helped make him famous as a young actor.
Recent Directing Work
In 2017, Hooks directed Madiba, a TV miniseries about the life of Nelson Mandela. The series, starring Laurence Fishburne, tells the story of Mandela's fight against apartheid in South Africa. In 2020, he directed an episode of the series The Good Lord Bird.
