Kevin Smith's Football Journey
Starting His Pro Career
After playing college football, Kevin Smith began his professional career. He joined several teams, trying to find his place in the National Football League (NFL) and later in the Arena Football League (AFL).
Arizona Cardinals
On May 12, 2014, Kevin Smith signed with the Arizona Cardinals. He joined them as an "undrafted free agent." This means he wasn't chosen by a team during the annual NFL Draft, but a team still wanted to sign him. However, his time with the Cardinals was short. He was "waived" (released) by the team on June 6, 2014.
Jacksonville Jaguars
Soon after leaving the Cardinals, Smith was picked up by the Jacksonville Jaguars on June 5, 2014. This process is called being "claimed off waivers." But just like before, his time with this team was also brief. The Jaguars waived him on June 19, 2014.
Seattle Seahawks
Kevin Smith signed with the Seattle Seahawks on June 25, 2015. He was waived and re-signed a few times that year. Sometimes, players are signed to the "practice squad." This means they practice with the team but aren't on the main roster for games.
On November 17, 2015, Smith was moved to the active roster, meaning he could play in games. In Week 11 of 2015, playing against the Pittsburgh Steelers, Kevin Smith made his first official NFL reception. He caught the ball for 21 yards!
In 2016, he was placed on "injured reserve," which is for players who are hurt and can't play. He was later released from the Seahawks' injured reserve. He did return to the practice squad briefly in November 2016 but was released again in December.
Columbus Destroyers
On March 11, 2019, Smith joined the Columbus Destroyers, a team in the Arena Football League. He was with them for a short time before being placed on reassignment on April 20, 2019.
