Kewanee, Missouri facts for kids
Kewanee is a small, quiet place in New Madrid County, Missouri, United States. It's what we call an "unincorporated community." This means it's a group of homes and businesses that isn't officially a town or city with its own local government. Instead, it's part of the larger county.
Kewanee: A Small Missouri Community
Kewanee is found in the southeastern part of Missouri. It's about five miles north of a bigger town called New Madrid. You can also find it about one mile west of two important roads, U.S. Routes 61 and 62. These roads help people travel through the area.
How Kewanee Began
Kewanee started in 1910. It was first built as a "lumber company town." This means a company that cut down trees and processed wood created the town for its workers. They needed a place for their employees to live and work close to the lumber operations.
The name "Kewanee" comes from another place: Kewanee, Illinois. A person who worked for the lumber company was from Kewanee, Illinois, and decided to name the new community after their hometown.
Even before the town was officially established in 1910, Kewanee had a post office. It opened its doors in 1907. This post office helped people send and receive mail, connecting the growing community to the rest of the world.
