Kgalagadi is a large district in the southwest part of Botswana, a country in Southern Africa. Think of a district like a big county or region. The main town and administrative center, where the local government offices are, is called Tsabong.
This district is famous for covering a huge part of the Kalahari Desert. More than one-third of Kgalagadi is actually part of the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. This park is a special place where animals can roam freely across the borders of two countries.

Exploring Kgalagadi District
The Kgalagadi District is known for its vast, dry landscapes and amazing wildlife. It's a place where you can see many unique animals living in their natural habitat.
The Kalahari Desert
The Kalahari Desert isn't a true desert like the Sahara. It's more like a semi-desert, which means it gets a little more rain. This allows some plants and animals to survive. The landscape is mostly flat with sandy areas and some grassy plains.
Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park
This park is a major highlight of the district. It was formed by joining two national parks: the Kalahari Gemsbok National Park in South Africa and the Gemsbok National Park in Botswana. This means it's a huge protected area for wildlife.
What Animals Live Here?
The Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park is home to many incredible animals. You can spot large predators like lions, cheetahs, and leopards. There are also many types of antelopes, such as springboks and gemsboks, which are well-adapted to the dry conditions. Birdwatchers also love this park because it has many different bird species.
Other Nature Reserves
Besides the big Transfrontier Park, Kgalagadi has other important nature areas. These include the Central Kalahari Game Reserve, Deception Valley, and Khutse Game Reserve. These reserves help protect the unique environment and its animals. They offer more chances to see wildlife and experience the quiet beauty of the Kalahari.
How the District is Organized
The Kgalagadi District is quite large. To manage it better, it is divided into two smaller parts. These are called sub-districts.
Kgalagadi North
This is the northern part of the district. It covers a vast area of the Kalahari.
Kgalagadi South
This is the southern part of the district. It includes the administrative center, Tsabong.
