Khairy Beshara (Arabic: خيري بشارة; born June 30, 1947, in Tanta, Egypt) is an Egyptian film director. He has been making movies in Egypt since the 1970s. He is known for changing how "realism" was shown in Egyptian movies during the 1980s. Three of his films are even listed among the most important 100 films in Egyptian cinema history: The Collar and the Bracelet, Bitter Day, Sweet Day, and Ice Cream in Gleem.

About Khairy Beshara

Khairy Beshara finished high school in Cairo. Then, he went to the Egyptian Higher Institute of Cinema and graduated in 1967. After that, he received a special scholarship to study in Warsaw, Poland, for two years. There, he met his wife, Monika Kowalczyk.

He started his career making documentaries (films that show real life). Later, he moved on to direct 12 full-length feature films (story movies). These films were shown at many international film festivals around the world. Khairy Beshara was also one of the first directors in Egypt and the Arab world to start making movies using digital cameras in the late 1990s. This was a big change from using traditional film!

America Abracadabra (America Shika Bika)

Traffic Light

  • 1995: Won the "Special Jury Prize – Silver Pyramid" at the Cairo International Film Festival. The jury praised it for showing "a nation’s troubles in a single night."
