A New Kind of Filmmaker
Khairy Beshara grew up in Egypt. After finishing high school in Cairo, he studied film directing at the Higher Institute of Cinema and graduated in 1967. He then traveled to Warsaw, Poland, to continue his studies for two years.
When he started his career, Beshara focused on making documentaries, which are films about real people and events. Later, he began directing feature films, which tell fictional stories.
Changing Egyptian Movies
In the 1980s, Beshara and other directors like Atef El-Tayeb and Mohamed Khan started a new wave in Egyptian film. They wanted to make movies that felt more real and honest. This style became known as "New Realism."
Instead of building sets in a studio, Beshara filmed in real locations. His movies often focused on the lives of everyday, lower-middle-class people. He was also one of the first directors in the Arab world to use digital cameras, which was a big change from traditional film.
Famous Films
Beshara has directed many movies that have been praised by critics and audiences. His work helped define the "New Realism" movement in Egyptian film.
The Collar and the Bracelet (1986)
This film, known in Arabic as al-Tawq wal-Aswira, is one of Beshara's most famous works. It tells a serious and powerful story about the struggles of a family living in a village in Southern Egypt. The film helped establish his reputation as a great director.
Popular Comedies
Beshara also directed films that mixed serious themes with comedy. This made his movies very popular with audiences. Some of these films include:
- Ice Cream in Gleem (1992)
- Kaboria (Crab) (1990)
- Amrika Shikabika (America Abracadabra) (1993)
These movies showed that realistic stories could also be entertaining and funny.
Later Work
After taking a long break from making feature films, Beshara returned with Moondog in 2012. This film was a docu-drama, mixing documentary style with a fictional story. He used new digital techniques, which made the film look different from his earlier work.
His 1995 film Traffic Light won a major award, the Silver Pyramid, at the Cairo Film Festival.
