The Khojaly District (Azerbaijani: Xocalı rayonu) is one of the 66 districts in Azerbaijan. It is located in the western part of the country. This district is part of the Karabakh Economic Region, which is an important area for the country's economy.

Khojaly District shares its borders with several other districts. These include Kalbajar, Lachin, Shusha, Agdam, and Khojavend. The main town and capital of the district is Khojaly. In 2020, about 28,800 people lived in the district.

The town of Khojaly was the site of a very sad event during the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. After this event, much of the district was taken over. It became part of a region that called itself the Republic of Artsakh, though most countries did not recognize it. After the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh war, Azerbaijan took back some villages. Most of the district, including its capital, was then looked after by Russian peacekeepers.

History of Khojaly District

The Khojaly District was created in 1991. It was formed from the Askeran District, which was part of the Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Oblast. This was a special area within Azerbaijan. However, Armenian forces took control of the district between 1991 and 1992.

Today, the district includes one main city, two smaller settlements, and 50 villages. Long ago, this area was home to the ancient Khojaly-Gadabay culture. This culture existed in prehistoric times, meaning before written history.

Geography and Nature

Khojaly District is found in the Nagorno-Karabakh region. The land here is mostly mountainous. The highest points are mountains named Qirkhqiz and Gizgala. The main rivers flowing through the district are the Gargar and Badara rivers.
