Music Career
Getting Started
Kid Sister was born Melissa Lauren Young in Markham, a suburb of Chicago. She began her rap career in October 2006. She started as an MC (Master of Ceremonies) at dance parties hosted by the DJ group Flosstradamus. One of the members of Flosstradamus, Josh Young, is her brother.
Her talent quickly got noticed. In 2007, she was featured on the cover of URB magazine as one of "The Next 1000" up-and-coming artists. Soon after, she signed with A-Trak's record label, Fool's Gold. A record label is a company that helps artists record and sell their music.
Rise to Fame
Under the Fool's Gold label, Kid Sister released her first single, "Pro Nails". The song became a huge hit, especially because it featured a rap verse from Kanye West. Later, she signed with a bigger label, Downtown Records, which re-released "Pro Nails" to even more success.
Kid Sister also worked with other artists. She was featured on Tittsworth's song "W...", and she created a mixtape with A-Trak. A mixtape is a collection of songs, similar to an album, that artists often release for free.
Debut Album: Ultraviolet
In 2009, Kid Sister released her first full album, called Ultraviolet. The album featured work from famous music producers like Rusko and Brian Kennedy. It also included a song called "First Ladies" with the English singer Estelle. This song was a new version of a classic 1989 track by Queen Latifah.
One of her songs, "Control", was featured in the video game DJ Hero. The album's main single was "Right Hand Hi", which was produced by members of the famous DJ group Swedish House Mafia.
Her producer, A-Trak, said that the album showed her growth as an artist. He noted that it included not just upbeat dance music, but also raw hip-hop songs.
Later Work and Sault
After her first album, Kid Sister continued to release new music. In 2011, she released a mixtape called Kiss Kiss Kiss. In 2014, she released another one called Dusk2Dawn: The Diary of Jane Jupiter, which explored more personal topics.
Starting in 2016, she began working with a British producer named Inflo. Together, along with British singer Cleo Sol, they are part of a mysterious music group called Sault. The group is known for keeping its members' identities a secret.
Personal Life
Kid Sister comes from a diverse background, which includes African American, Native American, and Caucasian heritage. In interviews, she has shared that she is a confident person who believes in herself.
Before her music career took off, she earned a degree in film from Columbia College Chicago. She even worked on two movies while she was a student: The Guys (2002) and Best Thief in the World (2003). To support herself, she also worked several jobs at once, including at a children's clothing store and a reggae club.
