A Building with Many Uses
This historic hotel was built in 1871 by Allen D. Morgan and Levi Kiel. At that time, there were not many people living in the area. Because of this, the hotel was used for many different things. It served as the main office for the county government. It was also the local post office, a general store, and even a church.
How Lyon County Started
In 1869, the Minnesota Legislature passed a law. This law created Lyon County, separating it from Redwood County. The governor at the time, William Rainey Marshall, chose several officials. Their job was to set up the new county government. On August 12, 1870, these officials held their first meeting. It took place in the home of Luman Ticknor in upper Lynd.
Why the Hotel Was Important
The Kiel and Morgan Hotel is a special historical place. It is one of the few buildings left that shows how early settlers lived. Back then, buildings often had to serve many purposes. They were used for both private businesses and government meetings. This was common in the early days of western Minnesota counties.
What Happened Later
The county government eventually moved to Marshall. It is still located there today. After the government left, the Kiel and Morgan Hotel became a farmhouse. In 1990, the owner, Eva Schrunk, gave the property to the city of Lynd.
