Who Was Kikkuli?

Kikkuli was a Hurrian person. The Hurrians were a group of people who lived in the ancient Near East. Kikkuli worked for the powerful Hittite New Kingdom. He was known as an assussanni, which means "master horse trainer." His full title was "master horse trainer of the land Mitanni."

Kikkuli's Famous Text

Kikkuli's training guide was written on cuneiform tablets. Cuneiform is an ancient way of writing by pressing wedge-shaped marks into clay. These tablets were found during digs in a place called Boğazkale and Ḫattuša in 1906 and 1907.

The text is mostly in the Hittite language. But it also has words from an Old Indo-Aryan language. This language is similar to Sanskrit, which is an ancient language from India. We can see this in some numbers and special words Kikkuli used.
