Kilcroagh is a small area of land, known as a townland, located in County Tyrone, Northern Ireland. It is found close to the town of Castlederg. Kilcroagh is part of a larger historic area called the barony of Omagh West and also the civil parish of Urney. This townland covers about 351 acres of land.

What's in a Name?

The name Kilcroagh comes from the Irish words Coill Chruaiche. This means "wood of the round hill." It gives us a clue about what the area might have looked like a long time ago.

People in Kilcroagh

During the 1800s, the number of people living in Kilcroagh went down quite a bit. For example, in 1841, there were 245 people living there. By 1891, this number had dropped to 89 people. The number of houses also decreased during this time.

The White Stone

Kilcroagh is home to an important historical site called the White Stone. This is a Standing stone, which means it's a large stone that was placed upright by people a very long time ago. It is considered a Scheduled Historic Monument, which means it's protected because of its historical importance.

What is the White Stone?

The White Stone stands over 1.5 meters tall, which is taller than most adults! It is special because it is made almost entirely of a shiny white mineral called quartz. This is why it's known locally as the White Stone. It's a fascinating piece of history right in the middle of the townland.
