Killarney was a small, unincorporated community located in Raleigh County, West Virginia, United States. An "unincorporated community" is a place that doesn't have its own local government, like a city or town. Instead, it's usually part of a larger county. Killarney was situated about 5.5 kilometers (or 3.4 miles) south-southwest of the town of Sophia.

History of Killarney

Killarney, like many places in West Virginia, was likely a coal town. These towns grew up around coal mines, providing homes and services for the miners and their families. The image in the infobox shows "coal scrip" from Killarney. Coal scrip was like special money that coal companies gave to their workers. Miners could only spend this scrip at stores owned by the coal company. This system was common in many mining communities in the past.

Over time, as coal mining changed or mines closed, many of these communities became smaller or were no longer officially recognized as populated places. Killarney is now considered a "former populated place" in West Virginia.
