A Look at Kilo 9's Past

Kilo 9 was started around the 1930s. This happened when the Fallas-Gutierrez sugar company built an 18-kilometer (11-mile) railroad. This railroad connected the Adelaida Sugar mill (in Fallas) to the Port of Chicola. A special crane was set up at the 9-kilometer mark along this railroad. This crane was used to move sugar cane from animal-drawn carts to railroad wagons. Because of its location at the 9-kilometer mark, the place became known as Kilo 9.

The first people to live here were immigrants from Haiti and Jamaica. They came to work on the large sugar cane farms. During the Cuban Revolution in 1964, many new homes were built. About 100 modern houses were constructed for the villagers.

Electricity came to Kilo 9 in 1965. New machines were brought in to help with farming. The old crane was replaced by a large, electric-powered station for processing sugar cane. However, on November 20, 1985, Hurricane Kate caused a lot of damage to the village. Today, Kilo 9 is mainly used for raising cattle. Some nearby villages include Kilo 12, Jucaral, Kilo 8, San Juan, La Teresa, and Ceiba.
