Kim Rak-hui (Chosŏn'gŭl: 김락희, born November 11, 1933 – died February 2013) was an important politician in North Korea. She spent most of her career working in agriculture and helping manage farms. Her hard work during the Korean War caught the attention of North Korea's leader, Kim Il-sung.

Kim Rak-hui became a member of the Supreme People's Assembly (SPA) many times. This is like being a member of parliament. She also rose through the ranks of the Workers' Party of Korea (WPK), which is the main political party in North Korea. In 1970, she became a full member of the party's Central Committee. Later, in 2010, she was appointed to the Politburo of the Workers' Party of Korea, a very powerful group of leaders. That same year, she became one of six Vice Premiers of North Korea, a high-ranking government position. She even led a special committee to fight animal diseases.

In 2012, her health began to decline, and she was removed from her high positions. It was later announced that she had passed away in February 2013. Throughout her life, Kim Rak-hui received several important awards, including the Hero of Labor, the Order of Kim Il-sung, the Order of Kim Jong-il, and the Order of the National Flag (first class).

Early Life and Education

Kim Rak-hui was born on November 11, 1933, in Kaechon, which is in South Pyongan Province in Korea. Before she started her career, she studied at the University of National Economics. This education helped her prepare for her future work.

A Life in Agriculture

Most of Kim Rak-hui's career was spent working with farms and managing rural areas. During the Korean War, she was in charge of making sure food was shared fairly. Her efforts were noticed by the country's leader, Kim Il-sung.

After the war, in August 1953, she became the general manager of a farm called Ponghwa Agricultural Cooperatives. This farm was in South Pyongan Province. She worked hard to help rebuild farms in the Kaechon area after the war. Because of her dedication, she was given the special title of Hero of Labor in 1955. This award recognizes people who have done outstanding work for the country. In September 1962, she became the chairwoman of the Kaechon Ponghwa Agricultural Cooperatives.

Rising in Politics

Kim Rak-hui was elected to the Supreme People's Assembly (SPA) in 1957. This assembly is North Korea's highest state body, similar to a parliament. She was re-elected many times, serving in the Second, Third, Fourth, Fifth, Ninth, 11th, and 12th SPAs.

In November 1970, Kim became a member of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea (WPK). This committee is a key part of the ruling party. Later, in November 1984, she became the chairwoman for the city of Kaesong. In April 1990, she was appointed chairwoman of the Rural Managerial Committee for South Pyongan Province. She continued to advise this committee even after stepping down from her main role in 1997. In June 2005, she became the Chief Secretary of the WPK Committee in South Hwanghae Province.

Important Roles and Contributions

In 2010, Kim Rak-hui was appointed to the Politburo of the Workers' Party of Korea. This is one of the most powerful decision-making bodies in North Korea. She was also appointed as one of six Vice Premiers of North Korea on June 7, 2010. This was part of a plan to bring more provincial leaders into important government roles.

As Vice Premier, she appeared in public often. She led a special committee within the government to prevent animal diseases, like foot-and-mouth disease, from spreading. The government also gave her the title of honorary councilor.

Kim Rak-hui was also chosen to be on the funeral committees for important leaders. She was on the committee for Kim Il-sung when he passed away in 1994. She was also on the committee for Kim Jong-il's funeral in 2011. Being on these committees showed her high standing and importance within the country.

Later Life and Passing

Kim Rak-hui was last seen in public in March 2012 at an International Women's Day event. Later that year, she was removed from her positions as Vice Premier and Politburo member. At first, some people thought this was due to political changes. However, when North Korean media announced on February 18, 2013, that Kim Rak-hui had died, it was understood that her career changes were due to her health issues.

When she passed away, Kim Jong-un sent flowers to her funeral. Besides the Hero of Labor award, she also received the Order of Kim Il-sung, the Order of Kim Jong-il, and the Order of the National Flag (first class). These awards show her long and dedicated service to North Korea.
