Kim Un-yong (born March 19, 1931 – died October 3, 2017) was an important sports leader from South Korea. He was a vice-president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). He also helped start the executive board of the World Taekwondo Federation.
Kim Un-yong earned a special degree in Political Science in 1963. He studied at Yonsei University. He was a very influential person in the world of sports.

Leading Taekwondo's Growth
Kim Un-yong became the president of the Korean Taekwondo Association in 1971. The Korean government asked him to take on this role. He worked to make the organization stronger.
He believed that Taekwondo was a Korean martial art. Because of this, its main organization should be in Korea. He then helped create the World Taekwondo Federation in 1973. Dr. Kim was chosen as its first president.
Taekwondo at the Olympics
Kim Un-yong played a big part in bringing Taekwondo to the Olympic Games. He worked hard to make it an official Olympic sport. He also helped South Korea host the 1988 Summer Olympics. This was a major event for the country.
He retired from his role as president of the World Taekwondo Federation in 2004. Choue Chung-won took over after him.
Kim Un-yong's Many Roles
Kim Un-yong held many important positions throughout his life. He was a leader in both Korean and international sports.
National Leadership
In Korea, he served as the President of the Korean Olympic Committee. He also led the committee for the 2002 Pusan Asian Games. He was the President of the Korea Taekwondo Association. Kim Un-yong also led the World Taekwondo Headquarters, known as Kukkiwon. He worked as an Ambassador for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He also helped lead the Rebuilding Korea Committee.
International Leadership
On the world stage, Kim Un-yong was also very active. He was the President of the Global Association of International Sports Federations (GAISF). He was a member of the Executive Board of the IOC. He also chaired the IOC Radio and Television Commission. His most well-known international role was as President of the World Taekwondo Federation.
Legacy and Recognition
Kim Un-yong's work helped Taekwondo become a global sport. Many people recognize his contributions. In December 2017, he was featured on the cover of Tae Kwon Do Life Magazine. This issue was dedicated to his efforts in spreading Taekwondo worldwide.
