Kimberly is a ghost town in the state of Nevada. A ghost town is a place where a town once thrived but is now mostly empty. Kimberly was once a busy mining town, located west of Riepetown and east of the former town of Veteran. At its peak, Kimberly was home to over 500 people.

Kimberly: A Mining Town's Story

Kimberly's story began with the discovery of copper. Copper was found in the mountains near Kimberly in 1877. However, the town itself did not truly start to grow until around the year 1900.

How Kimberly Began

Kimberly grew as a company town. This means a company owned most of the homes and businesses. Before 1907, about 100 people lived there. In 1907, the Nevada Northern Railway built a train track to the nearby town of Veteran. This helped Kimberly grow even more.

By 1910, a company called Consolidated Copper bought the land where Kimberly stood. At this time, the community had its own post office and even a school district.

Life in Kimberly's Peak Years

By the 1920s, Kimberly was a thriving town. It had a hospital and more than 500 residents. People lived and worked there, supporting the copper mining industry.

However, the good times did not last forever. The Great Depression hit in the 1930s. This was a time when the economy around the world struggled. Many people lost their jobs, and businesses closed. This economic downturn affected Kimberly badly. The town slowly began to lose its people.

Why Kimberly Disappeared

In 1958, Kennecott Copper bought Kimberly. Just one year later, in 1959, the company tore down the mills and buildings. The land where Kimberly once stood is now a large open-pit mine. This mine is where copper is dug out of the ground.

The town's post office was open for many years. It operated from July 1905 until December 1958, just before the town was demolished.
