Imagine a town that once buzzed with people, but now stands empty – that's a ghost town! Veteran is one such place in Nevada, USA. It's located west of a town called Ruth. From 1906 to 1914, Veteran was a busy mining community, even starting as a tent city. Today, nothing much is left.
The Start of Veteran
In 1906, people found lots of copper ore near where Veteran would be. Because of this discovery, a special company town was built very quickly. This town was made for the Cumberland-Ely Copper Company.
A railway line was finished in Veteran in 1907. This line was the very end of the Nevada Northern Railway route. It helped move the copper and supplies.
Veteran's Peak and Disappearance
At its busiest time, around 1910, Veteran was home to more than 100 people. It was a lively place because of the copper mining.
However, in 1913, the price of copper ore dropped a lot. This made it hard for the mining company to keep going. The next year, in 1914, the buildings in Veteran were moved to the nearby town of Ruth. After that, Veteran was no longer a town.
Even after the town was gone, open-pit mining continued in the area. This type of mining went on until at least the 1950s. Today, the place where Veteran once stood is mostly dug-up earth from the mining.
