King Ding of Zhou (Chinese: 周定王; pinyin: Zhōu Dìng Wáng), whose personal name was Ji Yu, was an important ruler in ancient China. He was the twenty-first king of the Zhou dynasty. This dynasty was a very long period in Chinese history. King Ding was the ninth king during the time known as the Eastern Zhou period.

He was the son of King Qing of Zhou. He was also the brother of King Kuang of Zhou. King Ding ruled from 606 BC to 586 BC.

Important Events During His Reign

During his time as king, King Ding sent an official named Wangsun Man. This official went to meet the army of the Chu state. He brought gifts for them. At this meeting, Wangsun Man met Prince Zhuang. This meeting was important for keeping peace between the states.

King Ding of Zhou had a family, just like many rulers.

  • Queen Ding of Zhou: She was from the Jiang clan of Qi. She might have been the daughter of Duke Hui of Qi. They were married in the year 603 BC.

Children

  • Prince Yi: He later became King Jian of Zhou. He ruled after his father from 585 BC to 572 BC. Prince Yi passed away in 572 BC.
