The Story of King Grayskull
In the 2002 version of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, we learn that Castle Grayskull was once the home of King Grayskull. He was a brave king who ruled with kindness and wisdom.
Protecting Eternia
King Grayskull had to fight many battles to keep his home, Eternia, safe. He faced the evil King Hiss and his Snake Men. King Grayskull won this battle, but he lost his special sword. He hoped this meant that Eternia would finally have peace.
However, another villain named Hordak then tried to take over Eternia. Hordak had even defeated the Snake Men! King Grayskull knew he needed more power to protect his kingdom. He went on a journey to find this power.
At the top of a tall mountain, he met a wise oracle. The oracle showed him his lost sword. She explained that his journey was to help him find his inner strength. The oracle also warned him that he would not survive the next battle. Even knowing this, King Grayskull promised to do whatever it took to save Eternia.
He returned to face Hordak. Even though Hordak's army was much bigger, King Grayskull used his mystical energy through his sword. He turned Hordak's own magic against him and his army. This sent Hordak and his forces to a dark place called Despondos.
Sadly, the oracle's warning came true. Hordak, even as his spirit was pulled away, managed to hurt King Grayskull very badly. As he was dying, King Grayskull said that a future hero would use his sword to defend Eternia.
The Power of Grayskull
When King Grayskull died, he put all his mystical energy into his Power Sword. This sword is now the source of He-Man's power. So, when He-Man shouts "By the power of Grayskull!", he is actually calling upon the power of King Grayskull himself, not just the castle.
After King Grayskull's death, his wife, Queen Veena, became the first Sorceress. His trusted advisers became the Council of Elders. They were also given power from his sword. The Sorceress first told Prince Adam this amazing story. She showed him a hidden statue of his powerful ancestor inside Castle Grayskull.
How King Grayskull Looks
King Grayskull's design was actually an early idea for He-Man himself. He looks a lot like He-Man, but he is even bigger and more muscular. He has long hair tied into ponytails around his face. He wears a long brown cape with fur on the shoulders. The people who made the show liked this design so much that they used it for King Grayskull.
He-Man rides a green tiger named Battle Cat. King Grayskull rode an even bigger giant green lion! During his war with the Snake Men, he also wore the same "Snake Armour" that He-Man used later. King Grayskull's voice was done by Cam Clarke, who also voiced He-Man in the 2002 series.
King Grayskull in Other Stories
King Grayskull's story is mainly from the 2002 cartoon. However, his name is also mentioned in the 2018 remake of the series.
Some action figures of King Grayskull have extra story details. These details suggest he fought alongside another hero named He-Ro. These toys helped create a new combined story for the Masters of the Universe world. This new story mixes parts from different versions of the franchise, including the 2002 series.
