The Sword of Protection grants:

Adora, also known as She-Ra, is a brave superheroine from the Masters of the Universe world. She first appeared as the main character in the 1985 TV show She-Ra: Princess of Power. In this series, she is revealed to be the long-lost twin sister of He-Man.

She-Ra also stars in the 2018 animated series She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, which is a new version of her story. Mattel created a line of She-Ra toys in 1984. She has also appeared in many Masters of the Universe comic books. One notable appearance was in DC Comics' series from 2012–2018. In some comics and toy lines, she has an evil side called Despara. Despara appeared in the 2024 Netflix show Masters of the Universe: Revolution. She-Ra is also featured in storybooks and some Masters of the Universe games.

Her very first story was in a 1984 mini-comic called "The Story of She-Ra." This comic, like the later movie, introduced her as Princess Adora, He-Man's twin sister. She was kidnapped by Hordak when she was a baby. This mini-comic also featured early appearances of Hordak and Catra. It came with the original She-Ra action figure in 1985.

The 1985 series aimed to make the Masters of the Universe world appealing to young girls, just as He-Man appealed to boys. Writers Larry DiTillio and J. Michael Straczynski created her background story. She-Ra was introduced in the movie The Secret of the Sword. In the movie, she was Force Captain Adora of the Horde on Etheria. Later, it was revealed she was Princess Adora, He-Man's lost twin sister. The 2018 series shows a younger She-Ra in a different universe. It has only a few connections to Masters of the Universe, mainly through Hordak and the Horde.

Adora's Early Life

80’s Adora
She-Ra as Adora from She-Ra: Princess of Power 1985

King Randor and Queen Marlena from the planet Eternia had twin children, a boy named Adam and a girl named Adora. Hordak, the leader of the Evil Horde, kidnapped baby Adora. He took her to Etheria, where she was raised to be a Force Captain for the Horde. She was under a spell that made her serve them. Adora wore a red outfit with long white sleeves, red boots, and a black belt. She kept wearing this uniform even after she joined the Rebels.

Becoming She-Ra

The Sorceress sent Adam and Cringer to Etheria. Their mission was to find the true owner of the Sword of Protection. The Sorceress used the jewel in the sword to show Adora that she was kidnapped as a baby. She also revealed that Adora had a twin brother, Adam (He-Man). Adora immediately believed this truth.

Seeing her brother in danger, Adora broke the spell that controlled her. She transformed into the hero She-Ra. She then freed He-Man and jumped out a window. She landed on her horse, Spirit, who then transformed into Swift Wind, a talking winged unicorn. They flew to warn The Rebellion. He-Man and She-Ra returned to Eternia for a short time. However, She-Ra decided she had to go back to Etheria. She wanted to help free the planet from the Horde's control.

She-Ra's Adventures and Allies

Adora had been trained by the Horde her whole life. This training helped her become the leader of the Great Rebellion. The fight to free Etheria from the Evil Horde was a huge battle. It spread across the entire planet. She-Ra called upon her allies from all over to help fight against the Horde's creations.

She-Ra and the rebel pirate Captain Sea Hawk were close allies. In some stories, they became very close friends and worked together to protect their world. It was never fully shown if She-Ra, He-Man, and their friends defeated the Horde. Both TV series ended before a clear ending was reached. However, it was clear that people across Etheria were slowly rising up against the Horde's unfair rule. Unlike Adam, who sometimes pretended to be lazy, Adora was always brave and selfless. She was always ready to help others.

When Adora transforms into She-Ra, two castles are shown. One is Castle Grayskull. The other is Crystal Castle, located on Skydancer Mountain. A being called Light Hope watches over Crystal Castle and advises She-Ra. In the Princess of Power toy line, two winged crystal horses, Moonbeam and Sun Dancer, also protect the castle. Only a few trusted allies know the Crystal Castle's location. She-Ra promised to keep its location a secret, earning her the title "Defender of the Crystal Castle."

She-Ra's Powers and Abilities

She-Ra is known for her amazing strength and leadership. She can lift very heavy objects, like large rocks and even buildings. She is also incredibly fast and agile. Her speed lets her easily block many energy blasts with her sword. She-Ra also has other helpful abilities. These include understanding animals, talking to them with her mind, and healing others. It is not known if her powers have a time limit. Sometimes, she is forced to change back into Adora, which suggests her powers do have limits.

The Sword of Protection

She-Ra's main weapon is her Sword of Protection. It seems almost unbreakable. It can block energy blasts, both magical and technological. It can also shoot beams of energy from the stone in its center. This stone is also used to turn Spirit into Swift Wind. The power beam for this transformation comes from the stone.

In one episode, the stone in She-Ra's sword was damaged. This made her unable to transform into She-Ra. Another weakness is that the sword needs a spoken command. In an episode where Shadow Weaver stole Adora's voice, Adora could not say "For the honor of Grayskull, I am She-Ra." This meant she could not transform.

The sword can also change its shape. With a command, it can become whatever She-Ra needs. For example, it can turn into a shield, a parachute, a helmet, a rope with a grappling hook, or a boomerang. She-Ra usually tries to avoid fighting. She only uses combat as a last choice.

She-Ra in the 2018 Series

A New Beginning for She-Ra

On December 12, 2017, DreamWorks Animation and Netflix announced a new She-Ra series. ND Stevenson was the executive producer for this show. The cast and official title, She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, were revealed on May 18, 2018. The series premiered on November 13, 2018, on Netflix. This new series is a fresh take on the 1980s version. It is not directly connected to the Masters of the Universe storyline, except for Adora's transformation chant still including "Grayskull." He-Man does not appear in this reboot.

Adora's Journey in the 2018 Series

Reboot She-Ra, as she appeared at a young age.

Adora grew up in the strict world of the Horde. From a young age, she was taught that the Rebellion was evil. She believed this completely because it was all she knew. But then she discovered the truth and decided to join the Rebellion. She was raised to think that the princesses were bad and controlled Etheria unfairly.

She grew up in a tough military setting with Catra. Their mentor, Shadow Weaver, raised them after Hordak found Adora as a baby. When Adora became a Force Captain, her view of the world changed. This happened when she found the Sword of Protection after sneaking out of the Horde base. Soon, two rebels, Princess Glimmer and her best friend Bow, captured her. They taught her that the Horde were the real oppressors.

After learning the truth and gaining the power to become She-Ra, Adora joined the rebellion. She won over its hesitant members while learning to master her new powers. However, Adora's choice caused a rift between her and Catra. Catra felt abandoned and became angry with her closest friend. Adora eventually saw Catra as an enemy when Catra almost destroyed Etheria. Later, Catra and Adora became friends again and worked together to defeat the Horde.

Adora later learned she was a descendant of the First Ones. This was a group that used Etheria's magic for a project called the Heart of Etheria. Light Hope brought Adora to Etheria to complete this mission. Adora had to destroy the Sword of Protection to save Etheria from destruction. This left Etheria open to invasion by Horde Prime. But after leaving Etheria to save Glimmer and Catra, Adora regained her ability to become She-Ra. Adora later learned that only she could restore magic to Etheria. This risked her life, but Catra saved her, and their strong friendship became even deeper.

She-Ra's Appearance and Powers (2018)

In the 2018 series, Adora looks much younger. She becomes much taller as She-Ra, reaching about 8 feet. She-Ra's costume is also different in this version. She wears a full tunic covering her upper body with metallic shoulder pads. She also wears bike-short-like leggings under her skirt and armored boots. In the first season finale, She-Ra wears golden battle armor. This armor is similar to the snake armor worn by her twin brother He-Man in his 2002 series.

In the second season, She-Ra discovered a new power in her sword. It could transform into any weapon or piece of equipment. However, her control over these changes was not perfect. After destroying the Sword of Protection in the fourth season finale, Adora could not transform for a while. She regained her powers halfway through the fifth season. She-Ra then gained a new look. Her long golden hair was in a ponytail. She wore a different headpiece with smaller wings, white pants with golden bracelets, and longer golden armbands. Her sword became a glowing projection that turned into a slim battle blade.

She-Ra in Other Stories and Media

The First She-Ra Comic

While Adora/She-Ra first appeared on screen in the 1985 animated movie He-Man and She-Ra: The Secret of the Sword, her very first appearance was in a 1984 mini-comic. This comic, called "The Story of She-Ra," came with the original She-Ra toy. The main story of She-Ra's origin in the comic is very similar to the movie. It begins with the Sorceress of Grayskull remembering baby Princess Adora being kidnapped by the evil Hordak. He took her to Etheria. Just like in the movie, Adora's twin brother Adam/He-Man is sent to find her. Some differences between the comic and the film include Catra being a more powerful villain in the comic. She is shown as a sorceress who can turn people into cat-like creatures. There are also slight differences in the looks of Catra, She-Ra, and the Crystal Palace.

She-Ra's Animated Movies

The Secret of the Sword (1985)

In 1985, Filmation, the studio that made the He-Man cartoon, released a movie called The Secret of the Sword. It was also known as He-Man and She-Ra: The Secret of the Sword. The movie started by focusing on He-Man, then introduced Adam's/He-Man's twin sister, Adora. The film revealed that Hordak and Skeletor had kidnapped her as a baby. Hordak raised Adora to be a warrior and captain for his Evil Horde, hiding her true family from her. The movie showed that He-Man's power sword had a twin, the Sword of Protection. When Adora used this sword to call on the power of Grayskull, she transformed into She-Ra, He-Man's female counterpart. The movie earned more than three times its production cost. It was later split into shorter parts and aired on TV as the first episodes of the She-Ra: Princess of Power series.

A Christmas Special (1985)

When the "He-Man and the Masters of the Universe" and She-Ra: Princess of Power cartoons were very popular, Filmation made a Christmas TV movie. It aired during the 1985 Christmas season. The original He-Man cartoon had aired its last new episode the month before, but reruns continued. She-Ra was still in its first season. This Christmas special brought He-Man and She-Ra together for their biggest adventure since The Secret of the Sword. It began with Queen Marlena remembering Christmases on Earth. After some funny events caused by Orko, the story ended with He-Man, She-Ra, and Skeletor teaming up. Skeletor's heart was briefly softened by two Earth children, a special puppy, and the Christmas spirit. They fought against Hordak and Horde Prime.

Masters of the Universe Film (1987)

She-Ra was originally planned to appear in the 1987 Masters of the Universe movie. Concept art was even created. However, the director, Gary Goddard, decided it was best to focus only on He-Man for that first film. She-Ra was planned for a sequel, but that sequel was canceled. It was later rewritten into the movie Cyborg.

She-Ra in Comics and Toys

Masters of the Universe Classics Toys (2008–2015)

She-Ra appeared in the Mattel Masters of the Universe toy line launched in 2008. This toy line tried to create a new story by combining parts of old stories with new ideas. The story was told through mini-comics with the action figures and biographies on the toy packaging.

In this version, Hordak arrived on Etheria after being trapped by King Grayskull. His student, Skeletor, kidnapped Adora and sent her to Etheria. After being raised by the Horde and becoming She-Ra, she eventually returned to Eternia. She and her friends helped He-Man defeat Hordak, who had taken over King Randor's kingdom. She-Ra followed her brother into space to the planet Primus. Together, they battled Horde Prime, the ruler of the Horde Empire. In some future stories, she became a villain called Despara after being controlled by Horde Prime.

DC Comics Adventures (2012–2020)

In December 2012, She-Ra appeared in her own DC Comics series. This led to her introduction into the He-Man and the Masters of the Universe comic series. Adora's introduction was an updated version of her classic origin story. She was still kidnapped as a baby and raised by the Horde. However, Adora's personality and life were much more intense and sad compared to her animated self.

Instead of being a kind woman under Shadow Weaver's mind control, Despara (Adora's Horde name) was a harsh force captain. She knew about the Horde's cruel nature but served them willingly. In these comics, Despara led the Horde in taking over Eternia. She forced He-Man, King Randor, and the Masters to hide and rebel. Because of a connection between herself and Teela, Adora began to break free from the Horde's influence. This started her journey to becoming She-Ra.

She-Ra in Video Games and Newer Shows

He-Man: The Most Powerful Game in the Universe (2012)

She-Ra appeared in the 2012 handheld video game He-Man: The Most Powerful Game in the Universe.

Masters of the Universe: Revolution (2024)

In Masters of the Universe's third part, Masters of the Universe: Revolution, she first appeared in a flashback in the third episode. This showed her being kidnapped by Hordak as a baby. She also appeared in her Despara form during the fifth episode's ending. Grey DeLisle voiced her as Despara.

In the comic book tie-in Masters of the Universe: Revolution #4, published by Dark Horse Comics, Despara appeared at the end of the story. A special cover for the comic featured the question, "Who is Despara?".

Future She-Ra Projects

On September 13, 2021, Amazon announced that a live-action She-Ra series is being developed. DreamWorks Animation is an executive producer. This series is planned to be a new, standalone story and will not be connected to the 2018 animated show. On October 4, 2024, it was announced that Heidi Schreck signed on to write the series. It is not known if this series will be connected to the 2026 Masters of the Universe film adaptation, which is also being produced by Amazon MGM Studios.
