Overview of Kings Canyon from the Rim Walk.

Kings Canyon is an amazing natural wonder in the Northern Territory of Australia. It is a huge canyon with towering walls, and it's part of a special place called Watarrka National Park. Imagine walls over 100 metres high, with a creek flowing at the bottom! The rocks here are made of sandstone, and at the top, you can see a maze of cool, rounded rock formations. These look a lot like the ones found in Purnululu National Park.

Kings Canyon is about 323 kilometres southwest of Alice Springs. It's a popular spot for visitors who want to explore Australia's unique natural beauty.

A Special Place for Indigenous Australians

Kings Canyon and the land around it are very important to the Aboriginal people. This area is the traditional home of the Luritja people. In July 2012, they were officially given the legal right, called Aboriginal title, over this land.

For hundreds of years before Europeans arrived, the bottom of the canyon was a safe haven. It stayed damp and cool, which was super important during times of drought when water was scarce.

Ancient Stories and Art

You can find ancient rock engravings at the base of Kings Canyon. These artworks are many hundreds of years old and tell stories from the past. Many of these sites are considered sacred sites by the Luritja people. This means they are very special and important for their culture and beliefs. Because of their sacred nature, some of these areas are closed to visitors to protect them.

The name Waṯarrka refers to the whole area around a sacred path that goes through the park. This name comes from the Luritja name for a type of tree called Acacia ligulata.
