Kids Encyclopedia Facts

A sacred site is a special place that people consider holy or very important because of their religion. Almost every major religion in the world has places they think of as sacred. For some religions, like Islam, these sites are extremely important to their faith. For others, like some Christian groups, sacred sites might not be as central to their beliefs.

The idea of certain places being "sacred" has been around for thousands of years. Often, a place becomes sacred because something important happened there, or there's a religious story connected to it. For example, Mount Sinai is a sacred site for Jewish and Christian people. This is because they believe Moses received the Ten Commandments from God on that mountain.

Uluru, a huge rock in central Australia, is a very old sacred site for the Aṉangu people.

A sacred site can be a natural place, like a mountain or a tree, or it can be a building. One of the most famous natural sacred sites is Uluru (also known as Ayre's Rock) in central Australia. It is believed to have been sacred to the Aboriginal people for about 40,000 years. Other famous natural sacred sites include special trees in India, Japan, and Southeast Asia.

Sometimes, buildings are built on natural sites that were already considered sacred. For instance, if a spring of water was thought to have healing powers, a special building might be built around it. This building would protect the spring and give people a place to leave offerings or gifts. Other sites are sacred because a holy person lived or died there, or their body is buried there. The Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem is one of the most sacred places for Christianity. Many Christians believe that Jesus' body was placed in a tomb there. The city of Mecca is sacred to all Muslim people because it is the birthplace of the prophet Muhammad.

Pilgrimage: A Special Journey

Many people make a special trip to a sacred site. This journey is called a pilgrimage, and the person who travels is called a "pilgrim." Pilgrimage is very important in Islam. Every Muslim person is expected to make a pilgrimage to the city of Mecca at least once in their lifetime, if they are able to.

Many Christians also go on pilgrimages to sacred sites. Pilgrimages became very popular in the Middle Ages, a long time ago. Thousands of people traveled to many sacred places, especially to Jerusalem, to important churches in Rome, to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Spain, and to Canterbury Cathedral in England. Today, modern Christian pilgrimage sites include Assisi in Italy, Lourdes in France, Fatima in Portugal, and the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City.

In Buddhism, the main sacred sites are four places in India where Buddha lived and taught. These places are Kapilavastu, Bodh Gaya, Benares, and Kusinagara.
