Kingsbury Plantation is a small community in Piscataquis County, Maine, in the United States. It is called a "plantation" because of how it is organized as a local government, which is different from a regular town. The area was named after Judge Sanford Kingsbury, who owned land there a long time ago. In 2020, only 28 people lived in Kingsbury Plantation.

History of Kingsbury Plantation

The land where Kingsbury Plantation is today was once part of a large area called the Bingham Purchase. In 1833, Judge Sanford Kingsbury bought this land for $4,000.

Early Settlement and Growth

Judge Kingsbury built two mills on Kingsbury Pond in 1835. Mills are places where raw materials, like wood, are processed. Because of these mills, more people started to move to the area. It grew so quickly that on March 22, 1836, it officially became a town called Kingsbury.

By the 1880s, the town had grown quite a bit. It had a store where people could buy things, a hotel for travelers, a church for worship, and two schoolhouses for children to learn.

Becoming a Plantation

However, in 1886, the town decided to change its government type. It stopped being a town and reorganized as a plantation in 1887. The state government officially approved this change in 1895. In Maine, a plantation is a type of small community that has fewer people and simpler local government rules compared to a town.
