Kids Encyclopedia Facts

A king is a male ruler of a country or a group of people. This important title has been used for thousands of years, from ancient times to today. A king is a type of Monarch, which means a single person rules a kingdom. The female ruler equivalent is a Queen regnant. Often, a queen is also the wife of a king, known as a Queen consort. In some older cultures or for leaders of tribes, the title of king might refer to a tribal leader.

What is a King?

A king is the main leader of a kingdom. Their job is to rule the land and its people. This role often involves making important decisions, leading the army, and representing their country to others. Kings usually inherit their position, meaning they become king because they were born into the royal family. This is called a hereditary monarchy.

How Kings Rule

Kings can rule in different ways. In some kingdoms, the king has absolute power. This means they make all the laws and decisions without needing anyone else's approval. A famous example was Louis XIV of France, known as the "Sun King."

In other countries, kings rule as part of a constitutional monarchy. Here, the king is the head of state, but their power is limited by a constitution or laws. The real power to govern often belongs to an elected parliament or government. The king's role might be more about tradition and representing the nation.

Kings Through History

Kings have played a huge part in shaping history. They led armies, built empires, and influenced cultures.

  • Ancient Kings: In ancient times, kings were often seen as having a special connection to the gods. They were powerful leaders who controlled large areas of land. For example, Theodoric the Great was a powerful king of the Ostrogoths.
  • Medieval Kings: During the Middle Ages, kings were central to the feudal system. They owned all the land and granted parts of it to nobles in exchange for loyalty and military service. Charlemagne, also known as Charles the Great, was a famous medieval king who united much of Western Europe.
  • Modern Kings: Today, many countries still have kings, but their roles are mostly ceremonial. They serve as symbols of national unity and tradition.

Famous Kings

Throughout history, many kings have left a lasting mark:

  • Charlemagne (748–814): He was King of the Franks and the first Holy Roman Emperor. He is often called the "Father of Europe" because of his military successes and how he brought different parts of Europe together.
  • Theodoric the Great (455–526): He was a powerful King of the Ostrogoths, who ruled a large kingdom in Italy after the fall of the Western Roman Empire.
  • Louis XIV of France (1638–1715): Known as the "Sun King," he ruled France for a very long time and was a prime example of an absolute monarch. He built the famous Palace of Versailles.
  • Nezahualpiltzintli (1464–1515): An Aztec king from Texcoco, he was known for his wisdom, poetry, and for supporting arts and sciences in his kingdom.
