Kingsley is a small city located in Jefferson County, Kentucky, in the United States. It's like a neighborhood or suburb of the larger city of Louisville.

In 2020, about 397 people lived in Kingsley. This number was a little higher in 2000, when 428 people called Kingsley home.

History of Kingsley

Kingsley was once part of a very large farm called Farmington. This farm belonged to the Speed family many years ago.

In 1924, a person named C.C. Hieatt bought a piece of this land. He bought about 46 acres (18.6 hectares). He then created a new neighborhood called Kingsley. It was an extension of the nearby Strathmoor area.

Kingsley officially became a city on December 21, 1939. This meant it could make its own local rules.

Geography and Location

Kingsley is located about 6 miles (9.7 km) southeast of downtown Louisville. It sits on a piece of land shaped roughly like a triangle. This area is bordered by Taylorsville Road, Tyler Lane, and Byron Avenue.

The city is surrounded by other communities. To the northwest, it borders Seneca Gardens. To the west, it borders Strathmoor Manor. The Bowman Field Regional Airport is to the northeast.

According to the United States Census Bureau, Kingsley covers a total area of about 0.07 square miles (0.19 square kilometers). All of this area is land, with no water.

Population and People

Kingsley is a small community with a changing population over the years.

  • In 1940, about 300 people lived here.
  • By 1950, the population grew to 488.
  • It reached its highest point in 1960 with 508 residents.
  • Since then, the population has slowly decreased.
  • In 2010, there were 381 people.
  • In 2020, the population was 397.

In 2000, there were 428 people living in Kingsley. Most of the people living there were White (96.5%). A small number were African American (0.93%) or Asian (2.10%).

The average household in Kingsley had about 2 to 3 people. Many households were married couples living together. About 27% of households had children under 18. The median age of people in Kingsley was 41 years old.

City Government

Kingsley works with two other small cities, Strathmoor Village and Strathmoor Manor. They share an independent police force. This means they hire police officers together to keep their communities safe. Sometimes, these three cities talk about joining together. This would give them more power and a stronger voice within the larger Louisville area.

Kingsley also has a special group called the Tree Board. This board was created because many old trees in the city were dying or unhealthy. In 2003, Kingsley became a "Tree City USA." This is a special award for cities that care about their trees. Thanks to grants, many new trees have been planted in people's yards and in Kingsley Green Park.
