The Kingsley Covered Bridge is a very old wooden bridge in Clarendon, Vermont. It's also known as the Mill River Bridge. This special bridge carries East Street over the Mill River. It was built around 1870, making it the only covered bridge from the 1800s still standing in Clarendon. Because of its history, the bridge was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.

About the Kingsley Covered Bridge

Where is this historic bridge?

The Kingsley Covered Bridge is located in Clarendon, Vermont. You can find it west of Vermont Route 103. It's on East Street Extension, which becomes a dirt road after you cross the bridge. The bridge is also very close to the Rutland Airport landing strip! Right next to the bridge is the Kingsley Grist Mill Historic District. This area includes a restored old mill and some historic houses.

What does the bridge look like?

This bridge is a single-span structure. It uses a special design called a Town lattice truss. This means the wooden beams are arranged in a crisscross pattern, like a lattice fence. The bridge is about 121 feet (37 m) long. It is also about 17.5 feet (5.3 m) wide. The roadway inside is 14 feet (4.3 m) wide, which means it's only wide enough for one lane of traffic.

The bridge's sides are covered with vertical wooden boards. These boards help protect the bridge's structure from the weather. The roof is made of corrugated metal. The ends of the bridge, called abutments, are supported by concrete. There is a sign on the bridge that says it was built in 1836. However, official records suggest it was actually built around 1870.

Who built the bridge?

The Kingsley Covered Bridge was built by a person named Timothy K. Horton. He lived from 1814 to 1896. This bridge is the last one remaining in Clarendon that was built in the 1800s. People have been crossing the Mill River at this spot for a very long time. Records show that a crossing was first allowed here way back in 1788! The bridge has a weight limit of 3 tons. This means only lighter vehicles can cross it.
