Kingston is a village in Nova Scotia, Canada. It is located in Kings County, on the north side of the Annapolis River. This area is part of the beautiful Annapolis Valley. In 2016, about 3,093 people lived in Kingston.

Kingston is an important service center for the local apple growing industry. It also has many shops and businesses, especially since Highway 101 makes it easy to reach. The village is home to Clairmont Provincial Park. This park is a nice picnic spot with red pine trees that offer shade from the summer heat.

History of Kingston

Kingston sits on land that was first owned by Bishop Charles Inglis in 1790. He was the first Anglican Bishop of Nova Scotia. By the early 1800s, much of this land was sold and turned into farms.

From Bloomfield to Kingston Station

The small farming community was first called "Bloomfield." In 1868, a railway line was built through the area. This railway connected Halifax to Yarmouth. Because of the new train station, the community's name changed to "Kingston Station." The station served nearby places like Kingston Village (now called Greenwood) and North Kingston. After the railway arrived, Kingston Station grew into a local hub for services and small factories.

CFB Greenwood and Village Incorporation

In the 1940s, the nearby village of Greenwood was chosen for a Royal Air Force base. Later, it became a Royal Canadian Air Force station. Today, CFB Greenwood is the largest air force base in Atlantic Canada. It is also the biggest employer in the Kingston area.

Kingston officially became an incorporated village on June 1, 1957. This was done to help build a much-needed sewer system. The sewer system solved problems with flooding caused by the sandy ground.

Kingston Today

The villages of Kingston and Greenwood are often called Kingston-Greenwood. This is because they share the same highway exit and local phone system.

Annual Steer BBQ Festival

Every year, on the second Saturday in July, Kingston hosts its famous Steer BBQ. This event has been a tradition for over 50 years. It includes a parade and a small fair. The main event is roasting an entire steer for everyone to enjoy.

Local Schools and Education

Kingston has schools for younger students. These include Kingston and District Elementary School. Older students attend Pine Ridge Middle School.
