A Look at Greenwood's Past
Greenwood started as a tiny settlement called a "hamlet." It was located south of the Dominion Atlantic Railway's Kingston Station.
The Air Force Arrives
A big change happened in 1942 during World War II. The Royal Air Force (RAF) from Britain built an airfield here. This new "aerodrome" was used to train aircrew as part of the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan.
In 1944, the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) took over the base. They called it RCAF Station Greenwood. Later, in 1968, when Canada's military forces joined together, it became CFB Greenwood.
Greenwood's Growth and Community
The village of Greenwood grew a lot from the 1970s to the 2000s. This happened because other air force bases in eastern Canada closed down. Their planes and people moved to CFB Greenwood.
Many homes in the center of Greenwood are for military families. These houses are often called PMQs, which stands for "Permanent Married Quarters." Most of the other homes in the village are on the edges of town.
